Golden Retrievers have a water-repellent and slightly coarse coat. They occur in all shades of gold, light or dark, but not excessively in either direction. They have feathering relatively rough coating) on the head, neck and rear sides of forelegs, front side of the neck and thighs. The feathering can be lighter than the rest of the coat. The outer coat is either straight or wavy, lying close to the body.

Both front and hind legs are muscular and strong, but not to the point of roughness. The movements of both pairs of legs are well coordinated, and they form a free, smooth and light gait. Viewed from behind, feet do not cross or protrude in any direction. Ribcage should be well sprung, but not barrel-shaped, and it should extend toward the croup.

Head is broad and well-balanced. Eyes are round and deeply set in the sockets. They are preferably brown, and their form and color give the dog's overall appearance an intelligent streak. Any deviation in form and color may detract from this necessary feature and therefore it is a fault. Ears are short, the front edge lying behind the eyes or above them when the dog is excited or alert. Nose is dark brown, and it may turn lighter in cold weather.

Golden Retrievers are trustworthy, poised and friendly dogs. They are hard workers and faithful friends. These dogs are perfect companions for your entire family, and they are rather good with other pets and rarely exhibit aggression to other people. However, as all dogs, Golden Retrievers can be protective about their owners and people they love.

Avoid confusion by telling your pet what is good and what is bad. Be consistent in your discipline, firm and patient. Long walks, jumping up and down stairs, and jumping down from chairs should be avoided as this can harm their young bones. Regular play is exercise enough for your puppy. If you notice your pup tugging at what is not allowed, do not pull it away from it because it can make your dog too hard jawed. Come up and gently take it away, using words. Golden Retrievers are house-broken easily.
